The Complete Guide to Zakynthos

Zakynthos, or Zante, is a Greek island with unique nature. Whereas the coast combines limestone cliffs and crystal clear waters, inland you will find olive groves and winding roads with small Greek towns along the way. With blue seas, caves, caretta caretta turtles, greenery, mountains and earthquakes as part of the history of the island, Zakynthos is one of the most diverse islands in Greece.

Beaches, Rock Formations & Caves

Navagio Beach

Navagio Beach or Shipwreck Beach lies on the north-west coast of Zakynthos, a beautiful Ionian Island. Due to the well-preserved shipwreck in the middle of the white sand among turquoise blue sea and colossal cliffs, you will find the probably most photographed beach in Greece, also referred to as smuggler’s bay. The incredible beach can be accessed by boat or admired from the viewpoint on the cliffs. Navagio is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Mizithres Rocks

Located in the south of the island, are the secluded Mizithres rocks. The rock formations, near the village of Keri, are a place of exceptional, raw and breathtaking nature and equally, one of the best spots to watch the sunset. When in Zakynthos, the rocks of Mizithres are a wonder of nature one should not miss.

Plakaki Beach

The Plakaki Beach is a rocky bay, with large rocks rather than a beach. After a steep adventurous walk down of roughly 20 minutes, you will come to see a magnificent scenery. There are not too many people here, so that this place is ideal for a calm and peaceful day in nature. It is simply paradise.

Pelagaki Beach

A wonderful natural beach, with crystal water and white pebbles mixed with sand, in the east of the island is Pelagaki Beach. The beach, also known as little Xigia is a great alternative to the other more popular beaches of Xigia with fewer people which allows for a peaceful place of relaxation. Pelagaki Beach has crystal water and white pebbles mixed with sand, forming a little paradise of its own. The beach can be reached by foot through a short 5 minute walk or by boat.

Fillipoi Beach

Close to the famous Navagio Beach, another beautiful location is the Filippoi Beach. This is a wild beach with clear water, caves, colourful butterflies flying around and an unremarkable underwater world. Besides the rocky entrance to the water which can be a challenge, the sea and view are fantastic. Therefore, the Filippoi Beach is definitely worth visiting, as a rare and secluded place on the island.

Skinari Cape

The Skinari Cape is in the far north of the island, offering wonderful views of the Ionian sea. Besides observing the cliffs, sea and some rare plants from above, there are also steps leading down to the ocean.

Porto Vromi

In the north-west of Zakynthos lies Porto Vromi, a beautiful little harbor. Whilst the views of the landscape are spectacular on the drive down to the beach, the beach itself has clean turquoise green water. There are a few rather small boats anchoring in the harbor, which add to the lovely scenery.

Cave Damianos

The Damianos Caves, which is situated on a hill near the Agalas village, is two-storey filled with stalactites and stalagmites. By a 5 minute walk along a small path that leads you through hills of pine trees and olive groves, you can reach the caves and enjoy a nice view. As the cave is not a place to stay for too long, it is most worth taking a detour when you are nearby anyway.
